Eddie Murphy: Raw?

So, i just got done watching Raw on comedy central. they aired it uncut and uncensored. why exactly is this considered one of eddie murphy's best works? it's crap. pure unabashed crap. there were a couple cheap laughs, though, not with the material, totally in the delivery. i remember him being funnier. i remember this performance being funnier. now, i cuss like a sailer so language doesn't bother me, but really, this performance seems more an excuse to say fuck as many times as possible than an actual comedy show. i literally turned it off and switched to c-span weekend during the final bit about his dad. not. funny. i saw that it was on, and oh boy was i excited. i know comedy central likes to run shit after 10 uncensored and shit. and i was so happy. i haven't seen raw since it was on HBO back in the day. the worst part is, i like eddie murphy. but this just does not hold up to the test of time. even the audience seemed bored, at times. seriously, i just turned to c-span weekend instead of watching raw. this irks me. part of this comes from the fact i was chilling at Rev's place and he had dvr'd SNL the best of eddie murphy. we had to turn that off towards the end too. i now have a forever skewed version of eddie. from this day forward, "axel f" will not inspire the same memories, it will not bring that warm blanket of comfort that eddie used to bring. like an ebony angel sweeping down and making me laugh, and warming me to my cockles. i guess this is just another example of not revisiting shit from your youth. it only tarnishes a once sterling memory.

goodbye eddie...

Ah, damn. That sucks. I watched Funny Farm on DVD like... three years ago. It wasn't as funny as it was when I saw it years and years ago.

Luckily, Spies Like Us has held up.

no shit. and stripes. ghostbusters is still funny even after the twelvtybillionth time i watched it. however, if you want to look at purely stand up routines, most of richard prior's work still holds up. old school george carlin's do too. fuck, the dice man is still funny, though, sometimes annoying. i mean, i can still listen to lenny bruce, phyllis diller, rodney dangerfield, and sam kinison and still get a bunch of belly laughs and or guffaws. but this, just... annoyed the piss out of me.

Oh ghostbusters will always be on my TV when they rerun it on TBS. How about Ground Hog day or any national lampoons movie. I suggest turning to the new Bad boy of comedy; Dane Cook. That guy always has me in tears.

The "new bad boy of comedy"?!?

Uh...ok.

Drunken Chud said...

stick, while i agree with your movie choices... i can't consider dane cook "a bad boy". ever. i love his comedy... but bad boy? not so much.

rev... ... yeah.

I haven't seen Raw. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be my idea of funny. I watch BBC, for god's sake.

Though, I do still like and watch most of the crap I loved as a kid. Just watched "Can't Buy Me Love" over the weekend. Utter tripe, but I loved it.

kristin, having watched it, i don't know how it was anybody's idea of funny. and yeah, can't buy me love... so awful yet so good. patrick dempsey is just such a dork in that.

Patrick Dempsey is awesome on Grey's Anatomy.

Just sayin'.

Oh, and I love "Can't Buy Me Love". What the hell was "Love Don't Cost A Thing" about though?

Nick Cannon is no Patrick Dempsey.

Kristin said...

Nick Cannon doesn't even come close. He's so not going to grow up, become a doctor, pick up Ellen Pompeo...

It's sad when producers are remaking 80s teen angst flicks. What's next? 17 Candles? The Brunch Club? St Elmo's Blaze?

Oh, and don't get me started on "Guess Who?" Ashton Kutcher is no Sidney Poitier.

Drunken Chud said...

ahhh mcdreamy(nohomo). yes scooter, he is built for that role. just the right mix of asshole and charm. swoon...

kristin, everytime you talk, you make me want you more. i was just about to bitch about guess who, and soul plane and really almost every other remake from the last 7 years.

medoc, nobody watches a tv show for realism, it's for the drama. lol. that said, it has its moments. and really, i just want a hot doctor like izzie... mmmm come to daddy.

Anonymous said...

Chud, I know you don't watch it for the realism, but there has to be some limits to the silliness...

Come on, interns performing heart-surgery? The worlds smallest surgical ward, which still performs some amazingly advanced operations? Only four or five qualified surgeons, each with their own specialty? Surgery on infants performed by normal surgeons? Doctors performing every little menial task, like transporting patients, taking various samples, monitoring patients etc...

Nah, Scrubs is way better, and Dr. Reid is a hottie...

Drunken Chud said...

doc, you got a point about scrubs. and come on, it is totally plausible to have the country's foremost brain surgeon married to the country's foremost pediatric surgeon, who happens to hate the daughter of the nations foremost woman surgeon... all in seattle. you don't know how hard that was to keep a straight face while typing that.

It probably was piss funny at the time, but it doesn't hold up by todays comedy standards.

Don't forget Katherine Heigl, working her way through medical school as a model. Sometimes nekid. That's great, if not realistic.

Gotta admit I'm addicted. It's better than General Hospital, my old addiction, and way easier to maintain - 20 episodes a season (give or take), not five a week, every week, forever.

Drunken Chud said...

steph, you are correct maddame.

kristin, yeah, izzie and i... we're tight. my dad is in love with the show. the only reason i know so much about it is out of tivo boredom. dad tivos it, i watch it. i fear i will lose touch with it this season, since it is opposite CSI and, well, we don't have a dual tuner.

But what about the Golden Child? The whole "I want the knife" thing? That's genius. If you haven't listened, try Mitch Hedberg. I can listen to Mitch over and over and over, that shit never gets old.

Just something I found weird while reading the comments, On multiple occasions Patrick Dempsey has almost run me over with his scooter!

AHAAHAAHAAHAAHAAHAAH!

Go suck on a tailpipe.

Drunken Chud said...

well, cindy, you bring up a good point. i loved golden child, and coming to america. but now, now i just feel dirty. heh.

stickler... ... ... ok yeah, i laughed at that. quite a bit actually. cuz i'm trying to picture patrick dempsey (can't buy me love years) in that goofy get up riding a scooter and maliciously trying to run you down. it's comedy gold in my mind.

scooter... there will be no tailpipe sucking, they get too hot and burn your lips. that is just a mean thing to tell someone to do. then you have the swollen lips that need grafts... it's a bad thing all the way around.

It was a metaphor. What I really meant for stick to do was to suck on a d____, s_____, f________ a_____e, prefferably after the owner has eaten chili.

Drunken Chud said...

a dear, sweet, female aussie?

Stickler said...

ok that wasn't joke, but anyways I pictured the same thing as chud when I put the two together. Now i'm off to a kind of blind date if she shows, wish me luck!

Dude, Steve Irwin died in a tragic yet not unexpected way. You've got to post something on this.

WOW! Raw is still funny to me. I can recite the mothafucka word-for-word. He has done A LOT of crap, but stuff like Raw and Coming to America remind me that he was once great . . .

I was reading old posts and couldn't let your Raw dissing go uncommented upon. Love the blogs though!

Drunken Chud said...

don't get me wrong dr. ken, i loved his movies. but raw... some of it was funny, just not as funny as i remember. i wish it was. i love the man. i think he's funny as fuck. but, since those two fateful days of "raw" and SNL's "best of"... it has cast a dark shadow. i wish it didn't.
