Arguing with idiots.

So, this evening I was jeered into venturing over to a neighbor's house for some beers at around 230am. So after some beers and lot's of idle chatter someone starts bitching being about being laid off. This is detroit. UAW capitol of teh world. These guys are UAW, and making $30/hr to punch in and go to the bar for half their shift. So, I proceed to inform them of the fact that the unions are pricing the American worker out of the job market and all I get is brainwashed union rhetoric. Assholes asking me if I believed in Christmas, and shit like that. When I asked them to make an honest to god argument, all I got was uneducated mud slinging. So when I asked them "If you owned a company, and were able to pay person a $20 to make a product and sell it for $50 or pay person B $5 dollars get the exact same product and still sell it for $50, which would you choose?" all of them said person B. So when I asked how I was wrong, I was kicked out of the house and told I was unwelcome. I was also told I was brainwashed. But seriously, what makes more sense to you, taking a decrease in pay to be able to stay at your current job or having the company go bankrupt and being without a job? Something is better than nothing and the unions cannot seem to understand this. It doesn't help that 100% of the people in the unions are fucking idiots who couldn't pass a business class or any class for that matter if it didn't involve pot smoking or blue collar working class hero rhetoric. Plus, when you try to explain to someone who is part of the "solidarity" movement, that if 8,000 of their brothers become suddenly unemployed, it will be amazing to them how quickly they would be willing to do your job for half the pay. I hate idiots. I hate ignorance. And I hate unions. They served a purpose in the 30's and 40's but now they're a hinderance to the advance of the US economy. Accept it or not. Time will prove me right. Economies adjust to what one can afford. If an area is able to afford $300,000 homes, and suddenly the area is bankrupt, guess what happens? the market can't bear a $300k home, it's now $150k. Deal with it. If you think that you are the pillar of the economy, you're wrong. The top 2% of this country pay for 65% of this country. So take your working class bullshit and go fuck yourself in your self rightous uneducated working man ass. Save me the headache of listening to you cuss and swear because all you can see is the tip of your nose and not the big picture. Ahhhh... whiskey kicking in... capitalism booming... unions getting bit by their own greed happening... UAW program titled "MK Ultra" exposed... hehehehehe. Union NO! Unions hate Jesus and America. hehehehehehehehehe. god this post has been festering. I'm sure I'll wake up this afternoon and see holes in the story, and spelling errors. but fuck it. This is me. And I, am anti union.

they should stop bitching about a "layoff" and realize they need to find a new industry, or the layoff will be permancent.

You said it best...the law of economics dictates that if you can have a cheaper and equally efficient labor pool, you had better move operations or your company is going to disolve into the dark ages.

We are no longer a nation of manufactures...get an education or go into servcie oriented business...

And Chud, I know your intentions were good...but you were doomed from the start with trying to rationalze world commerce to your neighbors at 2:30 in the morning.

So, you're for unions, right?

I believe some industries still require unions, just look at the unsafe conditions and the mining accidents in West Virginia over the past couple months. In other industries, they seem a little pointless - government office workers.

I'm not sure were machinists and skilled laborers fall, but the UPS strike of 1997 not only earned the workers more money, but lost many their jobs and the corporation their business, which they have yet to really recover.

I'm reading Atlas Shrugged, a very idealistic book that focuses on capitalism. I agree with some of it, disagree with some, but I find some basic tenets true. Just because you want more money, doesn't mean you can charge more. Economics. Supply and demand. Working hard.

Oh, dear. It's too early to think this hard. 3-day weekend. Hurrah!

I am not so much anti union, as I am anti greed. American union greed has made it more cost effective to build a factory on the other side of the earth, and then ship the product across half the earth to market.

Of course, that does not mean that foreign unions are the same thing. If you are barely able to feed your family while you are busting your ass for 2 dollars an hour in Indonesia, unionizing doesn't sound so much as greed as it sounds like survival.

Hell, the fact of the matter is that there is only so many unskilled labor in the world. Eventually, the whole world will be unionized. Maybe then, an equilibrium between capitalists and labor will be achieved. I don't see it happening in my lifetime, though.

What was that union bar we accidently walked into in Plymouth coupla years back? Scary....

This is a conversation that gets me yelled at whenever the topic comes up at my parents' house.

Well, that and politics...though, for some reason, by mom won't give me her signed photo of GWB....go figure.

TO sum it all up for you all the idiots are the resoin the union no longer works. so I am for the union of old but not of the now.

Now I am a union sportier but please don't take this wrong. I support unions only for keeping jobs and not having the employer just bullies you around. Now I have set on a committee and even been a rep and head of the union for the plant. There is a very fine line in which the union even dose now. Don’t get me wrong the union was great in the 30's and 40's and part of the 50's. But now in this day and age we have too many union people do nothing and get paid for it. Now I am all for kicking there ass's to the curb. I believe if the unions would go throw a major revamp, it might just make a different. What they need to do is educate there "Brothers" and not just keep them an over payee job. The big union’s car companies are going down. You will not see them much longer and it will go back to before the 30's the rich and pore. It is sad to say but the union’s heart and soul is in the wrong place. If they would step back form getting more and more money and just help instead of hinder companies they could coincide. But what you will see is the unions go out and many people unemployed in MI. Now when I was a rep and the head of the union for the plant I worked with the company to dissolve problems. Instead of filing graven and starting a fight. The other thing I worked really hard in doing is getting some of the older employs the ability to work part time/and still retire. Now I was working for a small company only 60 or some people. Were the union still worked in the way it did back in the day. In this economy there is no longer the ability to pay 5 people 20dollers when only 2 of them work. The big problem with the union is the idiots that are in it. They do not under stand what the company is relay facing all they want is money and the union to do it for them. When I was a rep I was very disappointed in the fact that any time the company wanted to fire some one I had to file a graven to stop them form doing it. So what did I do well I did not file any thing if the person deserved what happened. The only time I did any thing is when something was unjust to a "brother". Like trying to fire some one because of there age/ witch they did try and do. now I do believe if the company that I worked for did not have a union the people there would have only making half of what they did, witch was not much only 13-14 dollars hour. And had benefits which I know if not for the union they would not have. Same with vacation time. Now don't get me wrong the unions are now in the wrong and it will pain me so see them go out this way. But it is do to the fact of the idiots that you spoke to! I would love to see the unions have some power but they no longer have any thing for the fact the people will never stand to gather and will never stop just asking for more money. Money is what drives the union not better working conditions or safety which what the whole dame thing was founded for. So I would have to say I am for the unions of the 30's and 40's and part of the 50's but some were after that they lost focus of what they were and why there were here. To stop the companies from pushing people for little to no money to do an unsafe job. Now instead all they do is keep the ass holes that don't work jobs. If it were not for unions there would not be any retirements but now with less people needed for the job then before they can not even afford to have retirement in most companies. With the advisements in the world the union as we no it no longer serves a pompous.

Wow. Who knew it was such a comment-provoking subject?

rolli- yes, in the sobering light of day... i realize that drunken conversation with the neighbors could never end well. but, i'm a mule like that. if the argument starts, i can't stop.

kristin, yes, i agree wholeheartedly that there are some industries, and some countries even in which unions are 100% necessary. the auto industry... not one of them.

scooter, as my man Gordon Gekko once said, "The point is ladies and gentlemen that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of it's forms - greed for life, for money, knowledge - has marked the upward surge of mankind and greed - you mark my words - will not only save Teldar Paper but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you." and that's all i have to say about that.

rev...shit... union bar in plymouth? i don't know...

chuck, well, i guess at least one person in the union will accept the faults of the institution. but i will only admit to one person. you can never convince me there are more of you.

My boyfriend is anti-union, too. I think. Something about health insurance I think. Anyway he just complains about it when it's brought up.

I think if everyone just wore George Michael Hiney Pants then the world would be a better place.

laurie... i love you... and your nonsensical ways.

steph, it's cool. i'm sure aussie unions are still about workers rights. here in yankeeville they're about worker greed. and unrightfully so.

We have a K-Mart by us that's constantly filled with picketers. I believe they're with the meat-cutters union. Anyway, I asked them one day what was going on and they said they were picketing because K-Mart doesn't employ people from the meat-cutters union. So I asked some K-Mart meat-cutters what they thought about the situation, and the employees told me that the meat-cutters kept approaching them, and the employees kept turning them down. Turns out it wasn't that The Man wouldn't hire union workers, it was that the workers didn't want/need to be part of a union! I thought that was really funny. Now when I shop at that K-Mart and they tell me not to shop there I tell them to bite my pasty ass.

Drunken Chud said...

i like wal-mart's take on it. i mean, i hate wal-mart, but when those assholes wanted to organize a union up in canada, and i believe the local gov't told wal-mart they had to allow the workers to organize, the walton family gave the area the finger, and closed the store saying, "we don't need your business." w00t!

Don't forget the productivity issue...it's practically impossible to fire a union member. Dude can show up to work half-lit, set fire to a car on the line, drop a wrench on somebody's head...still can't fire his ass. Who needs to work hard?
